If you’ve ever wondered what does a manicure include, you’re not alone. Many people book one but don’t really know what actually happens. Here’s a simple, no-fancy-words guide so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

So… what really happens in a manicure?

A manicure is basically a clean-up and mini-pamper session for your hands and nails. It makes your nails look neat, your skin soft, and honestly… it just feels nice.

Here’s the usual flow (it’s pretty relaxing once you get used to it):

  1. Clean-up: Old polish is removed and your hands get a quick clean or soak.

  2. Shaping: Nails are trimmed and filed into the shape you like — round, square, almond, anything.

  3. Cuticle care: The cuticles are softened and gently pushed back. Only extra bits are trimmed.

  4. Buffing: Nails are lightly buffed so the surface looks smooth.

  5. Moisturising & massage: This part always feels the best — a small hand massage with lotion or oil.

  6. Polish (optional): You can choose regular polish, gel, or even skip colour and keep a natural shine.

Basic vs spa manicure what’s the difference?

A basic manicure is quick and simple. It covers all the steps above.
A spa or “deluxe” manicure adds a little extra love — things like scrubs, masks, longer massages or warm treatments for dry hands. If your hands feel rough or tired, a spa version is worth it.

Here’s an example

If you walk into a salon for a basic manicure around lunch break, you’ll usually be done in 20–30 minutes. Your nails look clean, shaped, polished and your hands feel softer. Simple, but you walk out feeling a bit put-together.

Quick tip: how to make it last longer

  • Keep your hands moisturised daily

  • Avoid heavy washing right after the manicure

  • Use gloves while doing chores

  • Don’t peel gel polish (it weakens the nails)

FAQs

Does every manicure include polish?
Nope. You can totally skip polish and just go for clean, shiny nails.

How often should I get one?
Every 2–3 weeks is normal for most people.

Is cuticle cutting safe?
Salons usually remove only the dead skin. It shouldn’t hurt at all.
