One of the most common questions before a first treatment is: how long will I look different? The honest answer is that Botox downtime and filler recovery are both short, but what you do afterwards affects how smoothly it goes.
This guide explains what to expect, what to avoid and when to get help. Always follow your own doctor's instructions, as they may differ depending on your treatment.

Do |
Avoid (usually for the first 24 hours) |
|
Stay upright for around 4 hours after treatment, as advised by your doctor. |
Rubbing, pressing or massaging the treated area. |
|
Gently move your facial muscles if your doctor recommends it. |
Strenuous exercise, which raises blood flow to the face. |
|
Use sunscreen and gentle skin care as usual. |
Saunas, steam rooms and very hot showers. |
|
Apply makeup gently only if your doctor says it's fine. |
Alcohol, which can increase the chance of bruising. |
|
Doctor's Note "Most Botox side effects are mild and settle on their own. The most important thing is not to massage the area and to follow the aftercare instructions we give you, because they depend on where and how much we've treated." — Dr. Nabaneeta Saikia, Aesthetic Physician, Bodycraft Clinic. Filler Aftercare and Recovery
Filler recovery varies by area. Lips tend to swell more than cheeks, for example. In general:
• Expect swelling and bruising for a few days. It usually improves within a week.
• Avoid strenuous exercise, heat and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours.
• Don't press or massage the area unless your doctor tells you to.
• Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night to help reduce swelling.
• Wait before facials or dental work. Your doctor will advise how long, often around two weeks.
• Small lumps can be normal early on. Contact your doctor if they don't settle.

When to Contact Your Doctor
Most reactions are mild, but call your doctor promptly if you notice:
• Severe or increasing pain, or swelling that keeps worsening
• Skin that turns white, grey or dusky, or looks blotchy
• Vision changes, or fever and signs of infection
• Drooping or asymmetry that doesn't settle after a couple of weeks
If you ever have vision changes or severe pain, seek urgent medical care. Choose a qualified doctor and always have injectables done in a proper clinic.
