Acne Scars vs Acne Marks: What's the Difference?
A breakout may disappear but leave something behind. Sometimes it is a flat change in colour; other times, it is a visible dip or raised area. Although both are commonly called acne scars, they are not the same. Understanding the difference between acne scars and acne marks is the first step towards managing them appropriately.
What Causes Each One?
Acne marks develop when inflammation leaves behind a temporary change in skin colour after a breakout heals. Acne scars form when deeper inflammation damages the skin and disrupts collagen production during healing. Too little collagen can create a depression, while excess collagen may result in a raised scar.
How Can You Tell Them Apart?
Gently look at and feel the affected area. If the skin remains smooth but appears pink, red, purple, brown or greyish, it is more likely to be a post-acne mark. A visible dip, pit, wave or raised patch points towards scarring. This is a useful clue, although a dermatologist can provide a more accurate assessment.
Not All Marks or Scars Look Alike
Brown or greyish marks are commonly associated with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, while pink, red or purplish marks may be related to lingering redness after inflammation. Textural scars can also vary. They may appear as ice-pick, boxcar or rolling depressions, or as firm, raised scars. Each type responds differently to treatment.
They Need Different Treatment Plans
Acne marks can gradually fade, although this may take several months or longer. Sun protection, controlling active acne and dermatologist-recommended skincare or procedures may help. Textural scars rarely disappear completely by themselves. Depending on the scar type, a dermatologist may consider microneedling, radiofrequency, lasers, chemical peels, fillers or other targeted procedures.
You Can Have Marks and Scars Together
The same area can have active breakouts, flat colour changes and textural scars at once. This is why a treatment that improves pigmentation may not correct pitted or raised skin—and a scar procedure may not address every dark mark. Treating active acne early and avoiding picking or squeezing can help reduce the likelihood of further marks and scars.
