What It Is
Alopecia universalis is an autoimmune condition and the most extensive form of alopecia areata. It causes loss of hair across the whole scalp and body, including eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair. It is rare.

What It Looks Like
It often begins as round, patchy hair loss that spreads, sometimes quickly, until all hair is lost. Some people also notice nail changes such as tiny pits or ridges.

Why It Happens
The immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. It is not contagious and is not caused by shampoo, diet or hair products. Stress or illness may trigger it in some people, but the exact cause is not fully understood.

What Treatment Can and Can't Do
There is no cure. Options include steroid treatments and newer medicines such as JAK inhibitors, which have helped some people regrow hair. Response varies and regrowth can be unpredictable, so treatment is chosen by a dermatologist.
Living With It
Hair loss can affect confidence, and that is real. Wigs, eyebrow and eyelash options and support groups can help. The follicles are usually not destroyed, so early assessment matters.
