Laser Tattoo Removal treatment can effectively diminish or completely remove even the darkest and largest tattoos through multiple sittings. The laser tattoo removal process involves using pulses of laser light to break down the tattoo pigments, lightening the tattoo in the process. The broken down pigments will then get flushed out of your body.
During the laser tattoo removal consultation, the doctor will assess the tattoo and determine the number of sittings you will need. This will depend on the age, size and colour(s) of the tattoo. The colour of the skin and the depth of the tattoo will be considered.
Depending on the location of the tattoo, a topical anaesthetic is applied.
You are given protective eye-wear, to be kept on throughout the laser tattoo removal procedure.
The doctor/technician tests your skin’s reaction to the laser in order to determine the most effective energy to be used for the laser tattoo removal treatment.
Once that is determined, the technician uses the laser to pass pulses of intense light through the top layers of the skin that will only be absorbed by the tattoo pigment.
The area is then cleaned, following which an ice pack is placed to soothe the area. An antibiotic cream or ointment is applied and the area is bandaged.
During the laser tattoo removal, wear the protective eyewear provided by the aesthetician during the length of the service.
Keep the treated area protected with a thin layer of the prescribed ointment or cream and bandage the area with a sterile gauze for at least three days after the laser tattoo removal procedure. After three days, it is important to keep the area clean and dry. If necessary, clean the area gently with a mild soap and water and pat dry. Blistering is common and is part of the healing process. Protect the area with the ointment prescribed for at least 24 hours after the blisters have popped. Do not pick any scabs that form to prevent scarring. Avoid high water pressure hitting the treated area. Do not soak the treated area until all scabs and blisters are healed to prevent infection. Wear a sunscreen/sunblock on the area for at least three months following the laser tattoo removal treatment. Avoid make-up or other creams near the treated area for at least two days after treatment. Itching is very common during the healing process. Wear the prescribed cream to moisturise the area regularly to aid the healing process.
Potential side effects of laser tattoo removal include immediate whitening of the area along with bruising, swelling, blistering and scabbing. Most common side effects include redness, tenderness, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation.
