Pregnancy comes with a long list of “Is this safe?” questions and pedicures are definitely one of them. The good news: yes, pedicures are generally safe during pregnancy, as long as you take a few precautions.
Most doctors say the second trimester is the best time.
By then, nausea usually settles down, you feel a bit more energetic, and your balance is better which makes sitting for a pedicure a lot more comfortable.
Before booking an appointment, keep this simple checklist in mind:
Good salons disinfect tools properly or use disposable liners. Don’t hesitate to ask it’s completely normal.
Open windows, fans, or good airflow are important, especially if you’re sensitive to polish smells. If fumes bother you easily, bring your own low-odor polish.
They use stronger chemicals and removers. Stick to regular polish or “3-free/5-free” formulas that avoid harsh ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP.
If you have swelling, varicose veins, or clotting risks, avoid deep foot massages or very hot soaks. A light, short massage is more than enough.
Nisha, who was 22 weeks pregnant, went for a pedicure after a tiring day. Her feet were swollen, so she checked that the salon sterilised their tools, picked a mild polish, and skipped the massage.
She still enjoyed the session clean nails, soft feet, and a bit of pampering and everything was fine at her next doctor’s visit.
It’s better to avoid them. They involve stronger chemicals and harsher removers. Regular polish is safer.
Every couple of months is fine just make sure the salon is hygienic, the polish is mild, and you stop immediately if you feel uncomfortable.
